One of the major activities of Board is to develop skilled man power for the coir Industry. As early as 1965 a premier training Institute under the Coir Board viz. National Coir Training and Design Centre was established at Alleppey. The National Coir Training and Design Centre moved into its own building at Kalavoor, Alappuzha District of Kerala State in 1986. The objectives of the National Coir Training and Design Centre are development of trained manpower and evolving and popularising new designs and patterns for coir products, self employment opportunities under PMEGP, Job opportunity in coir industrial units. With this objectives in view, the following regular training programmes are being conducted.

1. Diploma in Advanced Coir Technology under the National Skill Qualification Framework level 4  total strength per batch 40 Nos. Duration One Year from I st January to 31 st January of consequent year with Industrial Visit Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for 3 days , 3 months of Internship for each trainees as per their choice Coir Units/factories.

2. Certificate Course in  Coir Technology for coir artisans  NSQF level 3 Duration 6 months, 1 month internship, two days industrial visit Tamil Nadu Coir Industries,  Total strength per batch  20 Nos.
Short term coir training offered at NCT & DC.

1. Training in spinning on the Automatic Spinning Machine
2. Training in Spinning on Electronic Spinning Devices(Optional)
3. Short Term training in composting Coir Pith.
4. Trainers Training Programme in Spinning Coir Yarn (Different Methods)
5. Coir polyester Moulds
6. Coir handicrafts.
7. Coir Geo Textiles manufacturing
8. Coir Frame mats
9. Finishing operations of coir mats
10. Maintenance of coir processing machinery
11. Operation of pneumatic operated looms

The advanced training course is intended for middle level executives sponsored by small-scale manufacturers registered with Coir Board/Coir Co-Operative societies/Government departments. The minimum qualification for admission to this course is a pass in Plus-Two or equivalent. Eligible reservations offered for SC/ST/trainees.

The Artisans training course is meant for actual coir workers already engaged in coir units. Two batches of Artisans were trained every year from  is t January to June 30th , Ist July to 31 st December 

The training under Mahila Coir Yojana is intended for giving 2 months training in spinning coir yarn on motorised ratt and 1 week training in spinning coir yarn on different methods including Automatic Spinning Machine.

The short term training in composting coir pith and treatment of Coirret is to educate entrepreneurs in the use of Coirret in converting mechanically extracted green husk fibre into white fibre and recycling of the liquor and production of Coir Pith Organic Manure(C-POM) using Pith plus.

The trainers training program is intended to train the trainers to be engaged in the field training centres for imparting training in spinning coir yarn on motorised ratt/ motorised traditional ratt/ Automatic Spinning Machine to rural women.

Short term training / orientation training on different coir processing machinery at NCT & DC. Besides short term training course on weaving mats, dyeing coir and weaving matting on semi automatic loom are also being conducted as and when required by the entrepreneurs, NGO's and coir co-operative societies etc.
All the trainees are eligible for register their name in the placement cell of the institute for job opportunities from other units of coir industry. All  successful trainees are eligible  to start up their own coir processing units under PMEGP assisted by the Regional Officer, Coir Board.
